Mickey Mouse Oreo Pops

So I wasted basically the whole day on Tuesday planning our ride strategy for Disneyland.

(In case you're wondering, we're not going until October, but us OCD freaks really like to plan.  Like REALLY like to plan.  I have our entire packing list typed up, have been brainwashing our 3 year old with DisneyParks videos on Netflix for awhile now, and am appalled at how few Halloween costumes are available in July.  Really now. Come on Target.).

In case you didn't know there is a strategy that works best.  If you would like to know a fun fact about me, it is that I am pretty much a Disney expert.  Which means I am also a nerd. I know all about the "secret" bathroom, California Adventure's unofficial opening 1/2 hour before posted, and the real skulls that are stuck in the walls of Pirates of the Caribbean.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, congratulations, you probably have a life.  If you do, we should probably be BFF's.

I digress.  I'm reallly excited about Disneyland this year.  So after I spent a day being a crappy parent and reading DIS forums and letting my 3 1/2 year old entertain himself with gumddrops and toothpicks all day (which he made me a space station out of, and cried when I eventually threw away), I needed to make it up to him.  And myself.

So we made these Mickey Oreo pops, and took some to his friends.  The cute little girl across the street "has been eating hers for 3 days because she loves it so much".  Don't worry Chase only ate like 5 a few the day we made them. Also he has thanked me like 12 times for making him 'the Mickey pops'.  And he's started calling me "M'am".  These are magical I tell you.

Mickey Mouse Oreo Pops

-Double Stuff Oreos (make sure they're Double Stuf)
-1 pouch or container miniature Oreos
-CK candy writer in brown, black, or white (If you can find this in a local store it's cheap. If you can't you could probably use homemade royal frosting.  You just need something that dries quickly to rock hard consistency.)
-Lollipop sticks
-Guittard Milk Chocolate Chips (Please use something good!  It makes all the difference)
-Vegetable oil or shortening
-Red candy melts
-White confetti sprinkles, and pink heart sprinkles

In a bowl, melt your chocolate chips at 50% power, stirring every 30 seconds, until melted.  Do not overheat.  Add a little vegetable oil or shortening.  How much depends on how much chocolate you use. Start with a little (1 tsp) and add until you have a good dipping consistency (I think I used around 1 Tbsp).  Be careful not to add too much or your pops won't set correctly.

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or a silpat. Dip each stick in a little chocolate and then slide  into an Oreo cookie.  (The chocolate will be the cement that holds your stick in the cream). You want your stick to be almost all the way through.  Some of your cookies will break.  Just reuse the stick on a different cookie.
Heat your candy writer in a bowl of hot water.  Use it to attach two miniature Oreos to each pop to form ears.  (Just use it like glue- dab a gob on each mini cookie and press against "head")  Place each Mickey onto cookie sheet and move to the freezer.  It should take only a few minutes for the candy coating to harden.

Remove from freezer.  You may need to reheat your chocolate chips if they have thickened too much.  Be sure to microwave at 50% power or less.

Carefully spoon chocolate onto each Mickey stick and allow excess to drip back into your chocolate bowl.  It helps to hold your mickey ears down so the weight of the chocolate doesn't break the ears off.  Place each Mickey stick back on cookie sheet and add confetti or bows as desired.  (To form a bow, place two heart sprinkles together with points touching, then top with a confetti sprinkle). Freeze several minutes or until firm.
To make stick-less Mickeys, "glue" on ears as described above with CK candy writer.  Heat your red candy melts at 50% power, stirring every 30 seconds until smooth.  Dip each cookie straight down into the coating, shake off excess, and place on sheet.  Decorate with white confetti sprinkles.

Wrap in cello bags and add some ribbon and you're set!

We are going to Disneyland in October too! I love this idea, I'm going to have to make these for my kiddos. Do they really open California 30 minutes early? I thought I was a Disney fanatic, but I think you have me beat.:)

  9. The Foulgers- YES! They almost always open California adventure 30 minutes early to let people ride Soarin'-and from what I've heard recently- Little Mermaid now too. The rope is still up at the pier until official opening time, but you can sneak in and get a couple rides done early and be waiting at rope drop to sprint for Screamin'. (Not that I've ever done that ;) )

  22. I love these!! We are also an extreme disney family...yes, I know all about the things you mentioned:) I can't wait to make these with my kids, they are going to love them! Random thing, do you know about Disney Worlds free dining??? If not, you should really look into it. It is the only way we do disney and we end up spending ten days in Disney World for the price of a long weekend in Disneyland:) They only offer it certain times of the year, but it is worth it. All your food is included, which is amazing!! Anyway, love your blog and I can't wait to make these!!

  23. Davenport's- Yes I indeed know about Free Dining! Unfortunately we live within driving distance of Disneyland but not Disneyworld! When are kids are bigger we're planning to go to the world and we most definitely will get free dining! Can't beat that!

  24. I sure do wish we lived within driving distance to either one! Before we had kids we planned on only going to DWorld when they were all in their teens, but we made the mistake of going two years ago when our oldest was 2 and we had a newborn, and since then I have been dying to go back! Our daughter still talks about going to Disney, she loved it! We have another trip planned next year, and I can't wait. We are making these Oreo pops this week to keep us in the disney spirit. Thanks for all the great recipes, I love your blog!

  29. They stay pretty crunchy. I would say you could make these up to a week beforehand although I've never done it. I don't live in a humid climate though and that may make a difference.

If you make them that far in advance I would definitely wrap them.

  30. OMG!!!! These are so adorable. Question: The recipe makes how many pops?

  32. Help! I tried this last night and my ears were falling off : ( I used royal frosting. Was my chocolate too hot? It seemed like it was heavy and weighed down the ears. Any other tips you have for me? Thanks! Carla

  33. Help! I tried this last might and my ears kept falling off!!! I used royal icing. Maybe I needed to leave it in the freezer longer? It seemed like the chocolate was too heavy for it. Can you give me any tips?? I put my melting chocolate in a wide mouth coffee mug. Should I use a bowl instead and not have it completely upside down?? Trying again tonigt. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Carla- did you use regular chocolate/chocolate chips? If so, your chocolate could *definitely* have been too heavy. Some brands don't melt very thin. I'd recommend trying again with brown candy melts or chocolate almond bark. These will melt really smooth and really thin and should drip off your Oreo nicely and not be too heavy.

One tip for keeping the ears intact is to angle the pop downwards towards the bowl while spooning chocolate over the top. (Instead of holding it horizontally over the bowl.) Basically you're holding it so the chocolate rolls all the way down from the "chin" to the end of the ears, thus covering it with chocolate, without actually putting all that heavy pressure on the little ears.

Lastly, be sure your royal icing dries "glue-like". Squirt a dab on a plate or counter and check that it dries ROCK hard. If not, you probably need to add more powdered sugar.

So sorry you had trouble. Please let me know if this helps & how they turn out!

    1. I used candy melts from michaels because I didn't have time to go to the candy store I normally go to. I think I'll add more sugar and let them dry more before dipping and maybe try adding vegetable oil. Thanks so much for the advice ! I'll let you know!

  35. I tried making this and it was a mess melting the red candy melts in the microwave. It would not melt. I am thinking of using my fondue pot to keep it warm? Have you used that before? Also, what do you do with the back while its drying? I put it on wax paper and it came off as soon as I took them off the paper. Any tips?

  37. I made Minnie cookies much like the Mickey ones here. My challenge was getting the ears to stick but I found double stuffed Oreos worked perfectly! They turned out great!!

  38. Thank you thank you thank you for posting these directions. You make it sound so easy. Can't wait to try and make these for my little girl's 2 year bday. thanks again!

  39. how far in advance can u make these

  40. The ones that are half-dipped should be served within a day or two. The pops that are covered completely in chocolate should stay good for up to 1 week.

  41. These are fab and just what I need for my sons birthday party. Is there any reason why you didn't put the Micky ones on sticks?

  43. You can definitely put a stick in them, it's just a little tricky because you need to do it after they've been dipped in chocolate and once they are covered it's hard to see where the cream part is. ;) Doable though!

  44. Do they add something to chocolate chips to help them melt? I used a bag of Ghiradelli Milk Chocolate Chips and followed their website as to how much Crisco to add. It sets up fine in the fridge but as soon as it gets to room temperature it gets VERY soft.

I needed to use more so this time I just melted the chips as is and it worked great.

I couldn't find a CK candy writer so I used melted chocolate to adhere the ears and it worked fine as long as they were allowed to set for a while.
